Business Management

PROGRAM OUTLINE

Your at-home learning program includes nine Instruction Sets designed to take you step-by-step through the techniques and skills you’ll employ in your new career in Business Management. Your first Instruction Set will be sent to you as soon as your enrolment has been accepted. Other Instruction Sets will follow as you complete your exams, so that you will always have training materials to work with.

You will need access to a Microsoft® Windows®-based computer (running Windows Vista® or later) and the Internet in order to complete your program with ICS Canada.

  • How to Plan, Organize, and Control
    • Planning, organizing, and controlling.
  • The Process of Motivation
    • The beginnings of motivational management; managerial power; authority and responsibility; morale.
  • Training, Communication, and Coordination
    • Employee training; the training process; communication in modern organizations; communication and coordination.
  • Cost Control and Work Simplification
    • Cost Control; cost control procedures; work simplification; the process of work simplification.

  • Modern Mathematics
  • Mathematics for Business
    • How to solve problems; percent in business; discounts; brokerage; simple interest; compound interest; installment buying; promissory notes; profit and loss; depreciation; saving and reinvesting money; fire and life insurance.

Instruction Set 4

  • Written Communications, Parts 1-3
    • Communications; parts of speech; proper usage; punctuation and capitalization; vocabulary building and sentence structure; how to prepare a speech, conversational speech, conferences, mechanics of letter style and advanced writing techniques.

Instruction Set 5

  • Accounting, Parts 1-7
    • Opportunities in accounting; types of business organizations; the nature of accounting; assets; liabilities; owner’s equity; transactions and their effect on financial reports; preparing a balance sheet; the income statement; the accounting period; statement of owner’s equity; recording transactions; use of accounts; debits and credits.

  • Business Law, Parts 1 and 2
    • Management functions and decision making; organizing the firm; financial institutions; financial decisions and risk management; the securities market; computers in business; government and business; international business.
  • Torts
    • Sources of tort law; civil procedure and tort law; negligence; defenses to negligence; intentional torts; nuisance.

  • Principles of Marketing, Parts 1 and 2
    • Challenge of marketing; consumer marketing; basic management functions; marketing strategy and planning; market segmentation; demographic and psychographic characteristics; buyer behaviour; ecological environment; technological environment; political and legal environment.
  • Managing Physical Distribution, Parts 1 and 2

Online Library and Librarian
Students in ICS Canada have access to an online library for use during their studies. Students can use this library to do the required research in the courses they complete or can use it for general reference and links to valuable resources. The library contains helpful research assistance, articles, databases, books, and Web links. A librarian is available to answer questions on general research-related topics via email and to assist students in research activities during their studies with ICS Canada.
