Announcing the ICS Canada Alumni Association Website

Welcome, ICS Canada Alumni! Dedicated to establishing a lifelong relationship with our graduates, we have launched an alumni website. The site contains a wealth of information and resources. Graduates can search for a new job, create a resume, design cover letters, and quickly access graduate services, such as transcripts. In the next several months, the Alumni Association will offer a bookstore, discounts on continuing education courses, and give graduates the opportunity to promote their own business services. Registering is as simple as using your student ID number, a new user name and a new password to access all alumni services. Site: http://alumni.icslearn.ca |

Tell Us Your Story

There is no one better qualified to understand and encourage students than someone who has personally experienced and met the challenges of distance learning. Many students need inspiration, motivation, and support just to enroll, as well as to continue with and complete their studies. E-mail your story to Jim.Healey@pennfoster.edu or mail it to Jim Healey, Penn Foster, 925 Oak Street, Scranton, PA 18515.

Stay organized. Misplacing a book, study guide, learning aid/tool, notebook, or even a pen or pencil, can waste precious study time.
Don’t procrastinate. There’s no “perfect time” to do anything. Just get started. You’ll be surprised how much can be accomplished.
Set study goals. Decide how much material you would like to cover weekly. Then estimate the number of hours you’ll have to study. Determine how much material you will have to cover each study session to accomplish your goal. Your instructor can help you with preparing a schedule.
Deal with distractions. If there are distractions, eliminate them or, if possible, move to a study area where there are none. Many Penn Foster students use the public library as a quiet “home away from home.”

ICS Canada has been delivering independent study programs through distance education in Canada since 1920. International Correspondence Schools (ICS) was the academic root from which ICS Canada and U.S. Penn Foster College, Career, and High School eventually grew.
Among ICS’s original faculty was science fiction writer H.G. Wells, who taught biology until 1893, when he became a full-time writer. His best-known works of fiction are The Time Machine (1895), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War Of The Worlds (1898).

Thanks to student GM3 D.C. Snow (U.S. Coast Guard) who wrote in to share a valuable resource with his fellow classmates. The resource is the Merck Veterinary Manual accessible on the web. It is broken down and organized by different systems (digestive, nervous, etc.) and filled with pictures, graphs, videos, and charts. It can be found at www.merckvetmanual.com. Other recommended websites include:
www.ipl.org The Internet Public Library site features directories on online texts, newspapers, magazines, and reference materials.
www.infoplease.com This site offers an online dictionary, Internet Encyclopedia, and almanac reference.
If you have a Web resource you’d like to share, e-mail me at Jim.Healey@pennfoster.edu.
