Work…and a Purposeful Life |
||
Phil Jarvis, a director at the National Life/Work Centre, which offers development programs to help people of all ages find satisfying and fulfilling work and lifestyles, feels that since work is such a large part of our lives, it needs to be a good part. To achieve that, our work must be aligned with who we are, making us feel validated and respected, as though we’re making a contribution that we value, and enjoy doing it. It’s part of leading a more purposeful life and having a sense of why we are here. To turn a leisure activity or passion into a job, determine what you love to do, set your goal, and then discuss it with people who can help you achieve that goal. Think outside the box and don’t try to fit into existing pigeon-holes. It’s all about attitude — any situation can be seen as bleak, or…as an opportunity. Think opportunity! An engineer, who was 47 years old when he was laid off, would walk his dog when he wasn’t busy applying for jobs. Although he received several engineering job rejections, he discovered in the meantime that he actually loved dog-walking. So, he decided to start a dog-walking business. He earns his income walking the dogs of overworked professionals, while enjoying his own dog, staying fit, and the fresh air! “It’s a great business and he’s happier than he’s ever been,” according to Phil Jarvis. Canadian career development specialists and the National Life/Work Centre have identified five messages to serve as the foundation for developing both your career and your life:
