The Importance of Knowing Business Fundamentals

Forty-three percent of chief information officers (CIOs) polled said they are placing greater emphasis today than five years ago on job candidates’ knowledge of business fundamentals when considering them for information technology (IT) positions.

In fact, Katherine Spencer Lee, executive director of Robert Half Technology, recommends that job seekers at all levels develop business skills, including at least a basic knowledge of finance, marketing, and management. Knowing the industry and understanding a company’s business helps candidates get and keep the best jobs.

Did You Know…

Canadian students may be able to claim a tuition tax credit, which is non-refundable. The purpose of the tuition tax credit is to allow students to reduce their income taxes by taking into account tuition fees for certain types of education. Tuition fees for most programs offered through ICS Canada courses are a fully deductible tax credit.

The amount of the tuition tax credit is determined by multiplying the lowest personal tax rate percentage by the amount of eligible tuition fees paid for the year. Contact Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) for further information on the tuition tax credit. A CCRA phone number can be found in the back section of your Telephone Directory, or visit the CCRA website at www.ccra.gc.ca.

Knowing the challenges they may have to face and how to survive those challenges can make learning easier for adult students. In “Re-entry Challenges and Survival Tips for Adult Students,” Kimeiko Hotta Dover discusses the special concerns and justified fears adult learners face.

Challenges:

  • They are more likely to have multiple responsibilities, requiring them to juggle commitments to school, family, and employers.

  • They may be haunted by negative earlier experiences with formal education or worry about being “rusty.”

  • They may feel uncomfortable around those younger and more technologically savvy.

  • Previous dropouts may be anxious about being able to complete the program this time around.

Survival tips:

  • Value your experience. Your life and work experiences can sometimes give you an advantage over those less experienced.

  • Seek understanding and support. Returning to school means new commitments and responsibilities.

  • Manage time effectively and establish good study habits. Understand your particular learning style and make the most of it.
