Given the increasing number of online job boards, an electronic resume may be necessary to apply for jobs. Electronic resumes use plain text or HTML documents for job applications online. When you submit your application materials via email or online, your resume may be entered into an automated tracking system which scans all resumes, keeping those with keywords similar to the company's job descriptions and discarding the rest. Presley recommends these five easy steps to format your existing resume into an e-friendly one.

   1. Remove all formatting from your original resume.
   2. Use Notepad, WorkPad, or SimpleText to reformat.
   3. Stick to a simple 12 pt. font and style, remove bullets.
   4. Apply keywords and place the important ones first,
       avoid abbreviations.
   5. Test it. Email your resume to friends who use
       various Internet service providers.
